Learn How Kids are Raising School Fees For The Needy at Karima Boys

A few weeks ago, I accompanied a team of volunteers from NGO BeFEDO (Better Future Empowerment and Development Organisation) for a mentorship session at Karima Boys in Othaya.

I had a great time interacting with pupils from different schools as the day was also a math contest day in the school.

As I talked to the young boys and girls, it was evident to me that this is a generation that is well aware of the different career options. The most amazing thing was most of them actually knew what career they wanted to pursue.

This was really encouraging as all I had to do was help them understand the dynamics and requirements of the different career option. In addition to giving them pointers on how to study and achieve their goals.

That aside, what stood out for me on this particular day was the initiative by the boys at Karima Boys.

I have been to so many schools before and have never come across such kindness and generosity.

At Karima Boys, students have realized that there are those among them who are very needy and have taken a step to keep them in school.

What a noble cause, May the Lord Almighty bless these boys.

At the school, there is a Social Welfare Club which uses unconventional tactics to fund-raise for fellow students.
  • The students sell sweets (Lollipops), cakes and Mandazis as a way to get money.
  • They also run a barber shop in the school and the proceeds go to the club.
  • They also rear chicken and rabbits which they sell to parents and also to the school during board and PTA  meetings.
  • During school events they prepare donation proforma which they circulate to parents.
  • Plans are underway to start rearing pigs to support the same initiative.
This is the kind of initiatives we need from our leaders and organizations. We have the ability to put all our children in school o matter the cost.

These boys have high levels of integrity. Once they collect the money they take it to the bursar and suggest the pupil who should receive the 'bursary' first.

As a society we should applaud and support such great projects. The club was founded in 2009 by a student and left the club under the patronage of Mr. Ndugu the Deputy Principal.

Take a step and make a change today.
