"Tumaini Senta" Review

This is a medical drama that airs on KTN every Saturday at 7:30pm since it was first aired on 9th July 2016.

I appreciate the concept that has been well executed by Kikwetu Productions under the guidance of Kangethe Mungai who
is the producer and director of Tumaini Senta. It is not easy to localize a medical drama especially using a slum setting.

The three main characters are Dr. Taabu (Nice Githinji), Dr. Zainab (Veronica Waceke) and Sniper (Elly Young Omukubi). Taabu is a graduate doctor from abroad who has returned to the country and is interested in giving back to the society.

Taabu together with her college buddy Zainab, go ahead to put up a health center in one of Nairobi’s notorious slum. To their surprise, things do not go as planned because of the challenges that people in the slums face which becomes an uphill task for the dual to handle.

Other than offering medical solutions they are faced with the task of handling social issues such as alcoholism, substance abuse, crime and unlawfulness as well as social vices such as prostitution and oppression just to mention but a few.

The challenges they face build their personalities and also challenge their abilities and limits. In some instances, their loyalty and friendship is put to test and in one way or another they are able to work it out. The health center has become a source of hope for most of the slum dwellers.

The plot of this TV Series has been well thought out as it brings out the real issues faced by slum dwellers. Despite the efforts of bringing hope to the local residents, there are things that are beyond their control, showing that more needs to be done to salvage the situation in the slums. This is a clear depiction of the slum and it is a great way to call attention to what is happening behind the scenes as well as incite action.
