The American Embassy Library

For the last three weeks I have been visiting different libraries in Nairobi and I will be sharing with you some of my observations.

The first library I visited was the USA Embassy library located in Gigiri just
opposite the United Nations Headquarters. This is a conducive environment for one to read and even relax away from the hustle and bustle of the CBD. The library is rich in educational material especially on the American History and Heritage.

What surprised me was the fact that this library is available to Kenyans who are over 18 years for free. All you need to do is visit the embassy, fill in a form and provide two passport photos together with a copy of your national ID. A library card will be issued to you and then you will have unlimited access to the library. Keep in mind that the subscription is annual and you will have to renew it for free when the year comes to an end.

Apart from the physical library, the USA Embassy library has an online library which is equipped with over 30 databases containing different subjects and is free to Kenyans.

To access the elibrary USA all you need to do is register at the embassy then a user name and password will be sent to your email address. Again remember this service is for free and this time the subscription is not annual. Once you have the password, you can use the library forever. How cool is that.

The department of State has paid for these resources so that we can have an easy time studying and even carrying out research.

If you are stuck with your research or thesis due to unavailability of books then this is your chance to visit the USA Embassy library and your troubles will come to an end.

For more information you can visit http://elibraryusa.state.gov/ or you can send an email to ircnairobi@state.gov for any inquiries.
