The 4 Unwritten Rules on Office Parties

We are heading to the festive season and it has become tradition for organizations to close the year with a dinner or party.

This is a fun way for
staff to bond especially for big organizations. This could be your chance to get to talk to that person you have been eyeing from a different department. It is also a way for the employer to appreciate the staff.

Rule Number One
The office parties are either optional or compulsory but whichever the case, don’t miss it. The employer may say it is optional and in real sense they mean, “I have invested so much for you to miss this.”

On the other hand, missing an office party reflects poorly on your attitude towards colleagues. You wouldn’t want that.

Rule Number Two Is On Dressing
Keep it casual but do not overdo it. Ladies get that fitting dress but make sure it is not too tight or very short, leaving nothing to the imagination. And also try to go for basic colours like black or red. You can never go wrong with them.

For gents, try to get a different outfit from your office wear. I know most of you will step out from the office directly to the party.

Third Rule Covers Indulgence
By indulgence I mean food consumption and alcohol intake. The menu may be outside your usual. Keep it simple and avoid coming out as a hog or having a case of food poisoning.

Alcohol has no master so be your own master and keep it low. If you are likely to get unruly, avoid it completely. Remember, your boss is silently watching.

Rule Number Four is on Socializing
This is a party so you MUST mingle. Trying to talk to people from other departments and keep the conversations brief. This is an attempt towards knowing your colleagues. Since you are not friends keep the discussion basic avoid asking or sharing personal information.

On the same note, make sure you salute your boss before getting carried away by the party. Otherwise, you will find yourself in an awkward moment dancing with your boss.

Avoid forming subgroups with your friends. If you must sit with friends let them not be more than two. This is because, you can easily forget that you are in a formal event and start laughing loudly or discussing someone.

In conclusion, make sure you are on top of your game. At office parties, employers are often observing your behaviors and making crucial decisions such as promotions and demotions. You have no idea what will tip them off and after all you need that job come next year.

You do not want to compose the office gossip next year, so keep your behavior on check. Now you are equipped, go and enjoy that office party.
