“There is no such difference between men and women that women
may not do great things, as we have seen by the example of many saints who have
done great things.
And I hope in God that it will be seen that women in
time to come will do much.” Mary Ward, 1617.
These
were the words of a woman who lived in a time of great conflict for the Roman
Catholic Church in England. She was dedicated to serving the poor and her
methods were questioned by the church and she even found herself in jail at one
point in her life.
I do not want to bore you with
history but for me to talk about the Loreto High School, Limuru you must
understand the legacy of Mary
Ward, founder of Loreto Sisters.
She had a strong conviction to
administer God’s will and felt that women were not supposed to be limited in
what they should be allowed to do. She often said that, “I will do
these things in love and freedom or leave them alone.”
This is the spirit that is passed down to students
who attend Loreto High
School, Limuru. You learn compassion, how to serve others
and above all doing everything to the best of your ability.
To support my claim, let me give
you a real life example. The Late Professor Wangari Maathai was an
alumnus of Loreto
High School, Limuru. I do not have words to explain
her service to humanity but we know that she fought for the environment with
her life. Though from a different, time
Mother Teresa of Calcutta was also a
follower of Mary Ward. She must have
attended a Loreto School somewhere.
Not all Loreto girls have a Nobel Prize but
there are doing noble deeds to make this world a better place. It is this
compassion which has driven a group of Loreto High School, Limuru, old
girls to form an alumni association. Their aim is not recognition but to create
a better learning environment for girls who attend Loreto High School, Limuru.
The alumni association has a
vision to support needy students through scholarships and also assist develop
infrastructure for the institution. They want to open doors that the young
girls need most. This is one of the things that Mary Ward
envisioned and I believe is proud of.
The Loreto High School, Limuru Alumni Association will be
launched during a colorful dinner at the Sarova Panafric on 2nd May 2014 Starting
6.00 Pm. You will have to part with Kshs. 3950 only
which will help cater for all the expenses. The guest of Honor will be none
other than our Cabinet Secretary for Education, Jacob Kaimenyi. Come
join us as we celebrate the spirit of Mary Ward, a woman who dared not to just
dream but to also take action.
