Not so long ago I wrote an article on road carnage asking all of us to take charge,
but we do not seem to get it.
Now 20 young lives have been lost to our own mistakes. May their souls rest in peace but I do not wish peace for those who robbed these children of their future. I know we are all bitter but are we genuine at all? Perhaps the outline of deaths as a result of road carnage done by the Daily Nation will stir some emotions in all of us. I am not sparing anyone this time from the police who collect bribes, drivers who bribe, those who overload, and those who speed to passengers who board over loaded cars.
On the second day of the year at least 31 people died in separate accidents in Molo and Salgaa. Come to think of it, more people have died at these exact places and we are doing nothing about it. Sixth January, six people died in separate accidents in Berekenya and Mbaga. January 17 we did loose eight people at Manyani in Voi. Eleven days later, a double accident involving a saloon car and “matatus” claimed 10 lives in Kitengela.
The month of love had the same amount of lives lost. 10th February, 10 people perished in separate accidents in Mbooni and Kabarnet. On the 23rd day of the same month, 17 Kenyans left us in two separate accidents in Taita- taveta and Kilifi counties. In Murang’a county, a vehicle veered off the road at Muthithi market claiming eight lives on this same day. Four days later at least 35 people were killed in a bus accident near Mwingi town.
We carried our mistakes to March. Two people died in Kericho county on 4th March, on the 19th day of March three people perished at Sabaki and we lost yet other six lives along Nakuru-Eldoret Highway on the 24th.
My heart is torn apart by these losses so let me just give the numbers instead. In the month of April 20 people perished, 31 others left us in May, in June we had 36 deaths, we are in July and accidents have claimed 46 lives already. The details of these accidents are on the Daily Nation, Friday July 12, make an effort and look at what took away all these lives.
My question today is simple; do you have anyone’s blood in your hands?
