Latest Opportunity For Plus Size Women

In Campus I had a plus size friend, Anne (Not real name) and people used to throw all sorts of mean comments at her. Comments are not all she got, blank stares and wired looks were things  Anne was accustomed to. However,
this never lowered her spirits even for a moment neither did it influence her character. Anne was the most jovial and kindest person I knew in my four years in campus.

I will never forget the day she stood in front of a certain group that was fond of teasing her and she said, “You guys laugh all you want but if we were living in our grandparents time, I would be the only one who would be married to a chief.” This was enough to silence all her critics for a long time.

For decades, people have considered being petite as the ideal woman figure. To be honest, this is just a creation of the media our ancestors valued women with mass. Being painfully thin comes with its share of challenges. You may not understand this if you have not had to shop in the children’s section so as to get something fitting.

There is nothing wrong with being a plus size, what matters is you health. I know a good number of middle aged women struggle with weight and today my message is for you. Stop hating yourself and be proud of being a real African Woman.

We all remember the famous Slimpossible Show hosted by Lillian Muli on Citizen Television. She did a nice job helping women keep their weight in check but I still think the whole idea was prejudicial. The show should have been hosted by a real plus size who had lost weight and could relate with what those women were going through. Secondly, the main objective of the show should have been living a healthy life rather than loosing maximum kilogrammes possible.

There are those who agree with me on this issue of being a plus size, and that is why Suzie Wokabi took the initiative to organise a Miss Plus Kenya Beauty Pageant. The pageant was launched last year December and the beauty queen was crowned on 28th February in a very colourful ceremony.

The lady who took the crown was given the responsibility of being the ambassador for the Diabetes Kenya Association. As part of her reward she also gets to be on the cover of the next issue of Couture Kenya Magazine. I am sure you are already wishing that you had a chance to take part in the contest.

There is no need to be depressed anymore simply because you are a plus size. Go out there and seize all the available opportunities.
