Analysis of the Copper IUCD (coil)

This is an object made of plastic with copper wires, and strings at the bottom and is inserted in a woman’s uterus by a health provider. It can protect a woman for 12 years, but can be removed at any time if she
wants to get pregnant.

Advantages
ü  Very cost effective, only Kshs 500 – 800 for 12 years
ü  Very private, no one can tell a woman is using
ü  No hormonal side effects
ü  Very convenient, no daily action or regular visits to the clinic
ü  No delay in getting pregnant
ü  Can be used by breastfeeding mothers, and can be inserted immediately after birth.

Disadvantages
ü  Does not protect from STIs
ü  Must be inserted and removed by a trained health provider
ü  It is impossible for the IUCD to come out, especially if a woman does not have children or her uterus is small.
ü  Not good for some women e.g. Women with ovarian cancer.
