Analysis of Emergency Pills (Morning after Pills)



They are taken by a woman after unprotected sex, or in case of emergency e.g. rape or condom burst. They must be taken within 5 days after unprotected sex. There is no harm in taking often, but not recommended due to high dose of hormones and low effectiveness compared to
regular methods.

Advantages
ü  Can prevent abortion due to unwanted pregnancy
ü  No need to consult a health provider
ü  Can be bought at any pharmacy, without a prescription
ü  Safe for all women, even those who cannot use regular hormonal methods.

Disadvantages
ü  Does not protect from STIs
ü  Only prevent pregnancy from sex acts that took place 5 days before taking the pills
ü  50 – 95% effective, depending on sex acts and when the pills are taken
ü  May cause hormonal side effects, in the few days after taking the pills.
