Analysis of Family Planning Implants



They are small sticks the size of match sticks inserted by a health provider in a woman’s arm, under the skin. Examples are, Implanon,
Jadelle, Sinoplant. It can protect a woman for 3 to 5 years, but can be removed at any time if she wants to get pregnant.

Advantages
ü  Private, not easy for others to see the implants
ü  Very convenient, no daily action or regular visits to the clinic
ü  No delay in getting pregnant
ü  Can be used by breastfeeding mothers, from 6 weeks after giving birth.
Disadvantages
ü  Does not protect from STIs
ü  Must be inserted and removed by a trained health provider
ü  May cause hormonal side effects
ü  Not good for some women e.g. those with liver disease.
