Contraceptives Can Be An Alternative To Abortion

Last week as I wrote on family planning my aim was to clear all myths and misconception. Today I feel that more people need the information due to the rise in the number of abortions being carried out in the country.

A study by African Population and Health Research Centre in August revealed that there were 464,690 abortions procured in Kenya last year.

According to the Director of Medical Services Francis Kimani unintended pregnancy is a major contributor to unsafe abortions in most African countries, he also added that 45 percent of births in the preceding five years were reported by women as unwanted.

The study revealed that 120,000 women sought treatment for complications arising from unsafe abortions with a fatality rate of 266 deaths per 100,000 unsafe abortions in Kenya.
The study also found that 64 percent of women who sought post-abortion care were either married or in a long term relationship.

It is clear that our country is in need of information on contraceptives. Apart from the information the contraceptives should also be made easily available and affordable to all.

Prevention is better than cure so let us use contraceptives instead of doing an abortion.
