When I did six articles,
last year November, on family planning some of my readers asked me why I was so
passionate on the topic. Please do not get me wrong, my aim is not to advocate
for the use of contraceptives but to ensure that no more deaths take place
as a
result of abortion. The chill and wait message is not working let us face the
reality and embrace contraceptives.
Abortion is a real
problem in our country despite it being illegal it continues to take place in
broad day light. It continues to be practiced by medical students and quack
doctors as a way of making quick money. Chapter 26(4) of our constitution only
allows abortion when the health of the mother is at risk, and only a trained
health professional can certify the risk. If you are not at risk, I beg you not
to terminate that pregnancy.
I know some of you may
say they are at risk of being shunned by the community, being excommunicated
from the church or losing the one you love. This is a risk worth taking. If
someone loves you they will stay by you despite what you are going through. As
for church if you think taking away innocent life will earn you a front seat
then think twice. For those who say they are not ready you should know nobody
is ever ready but God created us in a way that we (women) can handle being
mothers.
If you do not want to
find yourself between a rock and a hard place just opt for contraceptives. You
may be having health concerns, fearing side effects or finding it inconvenient
but just consult a medical practitioner and you will find the right method of
family planning.
Abortion is a killer it
may not just take the life of the innocent kid but yours as well. According to
the WHO, in 2012 there were 360 maternal deaths for every 100,000 pregnancies.
1 out of 7 was from unsafe abortion.
Another Study was done
in 2013 by the African Population and Health Centre and it shows that more than
1,200 women die annually in Kenya from complications of unsafe abortions. This
goes to show how many lives we have lost as a result of fear of facing the
consequences of our actions.
Not all abortions are
carried out by youths and teens but also married women. This is why I keep
emphasizing on prevention rather than cure. The Study, The Incidence and Complications
of Unsafe Abortions and Contraceptive Use shows that 7 out of 10 women who had
unsafe abortion and developed complications in 2012 were not using
contraceptives.
We have the ability to
change these statistics by either abstaining or using contraceptives. We have
lost enough lives already.
