Life Goes on When You Are Gone

The person who came up with the above title as a campaign slogan against drunk driving could not have done any better. The message is precise and comprehensive. He or she
wanted people to understand that friends can easily replace you.

For me, this slogan has a deeper meaning. It has made me understand that nothing stops just because you are no longer there. You may be the best at what you do thinking that you are irreplaceable. Once you are gone, someone else will rise up and fill your space.

The television ad drives the point home in the best way possible. Once the accident victim is buried, the boys move on and make a new friend. I believe the advert gives us an opportunity to do a self evaluation of our purpose here on earth. It should challenge you to do everything to the best of your ability leaving no room for regrets. If you do your best, when your time comes you will just go in peace.

Let us take an example of Nelson Mandela. He stood for what he believed was right and fought against apartheid. Now that he has been promoted to glory, nobody can say that he should have done things differently because he did what was within his power.

Wangari Maathai
Wangari Maathai is another example. She dedicated herself to saving the environment and as Kenyans we can only blame ourselves for the global warming. I am yet to see a person who can fit into her shoes.

Going back to relations, our family may not be able to replace us but how they remember us will make the difference. You should make the decision to either be the forbidden topic or the person who people will always talk about at dinner table.

Friends can easily replace us because friendship is about convenience and companionship. However, the mark you place in people hearts will live even when you are no more. Your ideologies and assistance will always be real in your friends’ lives.

We all have the ability of deciding how life goes on when we are gone. It is up to you to decide whether or not your memories will go with you.
