Counting Your Blessings for 2013 as a Kenyan

I will start by saying Happy New Year and congratulating you for making it through to 2014. You
probably have a list of resolutions and things you want to achieve this year but I would like you to add one more item which is being thankful at all times.

As a country we had a tough and trying 2013 but that does not mean that we did not have anything to thank God for. The fact that you are reading this article means that you are alive and that is one big reason to be thankful. Last year so many lives were lost to sickness, tribal clashes, terrorism and even road carnage, May their souls rest in eternal peace. You are not part of those statistics so drop the frown and start counting your blessings.

Another blessing we enjoyed as a country is peace. Despite tribal clashes in parts of the country and political differences, our country has enjoyed peace throughout 2013. We even had peaceful elections in March and later a smooth transition to a new government.

Kenyans should be grateful despite the harsh economic times. I know most of you will not agree with this but our economy is doing well and the rate of inflation is dropping. Prices of basic commodities may have gone up but we were still able to afford our basic needs. Isn't that a reason to be happy?

I almost forgot one important blessing that each and every one of us has and that is people who love and care for us. You did not go through 2013 alone, you shared your joy, tears and laughter with someone and this is a huge blessing. Do not take loved ones for granted there those who have nobody to lean on.

We have a new government that has gone on record claiming that they will offer opportunities to the youth and women who have always complained of marginalisation. The Uwezo fund is your opportunity to attain financial independence and another blessing.

The people of Turkana had the biggest miracle in 2013. Having oil deposits and large mass of water being discovered in the county was something we should have celebrated. Turkana was among the poorest counties in the country and tables are now turning.

Finally, Kenya turned 50. We may not see this as an achievement but just appreciate the 50 years of political stability we have enjoyed as a country. God Bless Kenyan.
